Adjusting to the needs of the cattle market, Phageguard E Hides (PGE Hides) has successfully been introduced to the market after joined partnership with a large cattle processor and our proud distributor Zee Company (part of the Vincit Group).

By joining forces, Phageguard aims to harmonize innovation and industry expertise. Ensuring that we offer the right solutions that fit the market where needed. Our new solution against E. coli on hides, Phageguard E Hides (PGE Hides), is an example of such development to adjust to the specific market requirements. 

Multi-hurdle approach

The solution is engineered to specifically target E. coli bacteria on the rough surface of animal hides and is applied during a pre-harvest wash as animals enter the packing plant. The cattle processors use PGE Hides as a tool for a multi-hurdle, multi-technology approach resulting in an increased reduction of E. coli O157. Additionally, the approach reduces the chances of cross-contamination on the hides and subsequently in post-harvest meat. 

Unlike traditional chemical treatments or harsh interventions, PGE Hides only neutralize the E. coli found on the animal hides, leaving no chemical residue. This means that the industry can process hides without compromising on quality or texture, but also reduce risks posed to the industry and their businesses.

Introduction to the market

The trial of PGE Hides started in late 2022 – beginning 2023. After multiple tests showing promising results on the animal hides, Phageguard E Hides is now being applied to tens of thousands of cattle hides a day, reducing E. coli and the chances of cross-contamination within the herds.
